Constituent
Active
constituents of Red Yeast Rice
In
recent years, commonly thought the active ingredient of Functional
Red Yeast Rice is Lovastatin. Actually, this is unilateral
and not correct.
Lovastatin as the recipe drug was devloped in the year 1987
by American Merck & Co.,Inc through fermentation of Aspergillus
terreus to introduce it into market, and at the same time, they
named lovastatin, mevinolin and monacolin-k are just the synonymous.Their
molecule formula, molecule weight are the same and belong to
lactone structure.Later metabolization of some Monascus purpureus
also have been found that they contain monacolin-k,known as
lovastatin,it has the same effectiveness for blocking the
synthesization of cholesterol, and adjust the blood lipid.
Experiment showed,by way of ancient Chinese traditional fermentation,NO
lovastatin could be found in Red Yeast Rice, but it does
have the function of promoting blood circulation and remove
blood stasis.(In fact, the function is called adjusting blood
lipid and maintaining the normal cholesterol level) Red Yeast
Rice has been used as herb in china for many centuries,in
which the active ingredient is not lovastatin, but a kind of
material that more effective, safer, and can be marketed as
dietary supplement. We called it Red Kojic Acid.
Researches showed that lovastatin is the lactone structure. It
is inactive itself and it can be activated only through hydrolyzing
by hydroxylesterase into hydroxy acid structure, inhbit the
HMG-CoA reductase to interdict the synthesis of cholesterol. But
hydrolyzation would also produce side product--lovastatin,which
would cause the solubilization of striated muscle to get pained, and
also add the burden of liver.
Clinically trials have confirmed that through ancient Chinese
traditional fermentation of Red Kojic Acid,it has particular
effectiveness,and doesn't have side effect.
